Expressing Gratitude for Adversity
We should also be grateful for trials, adversity, and affliction. It is sometimes difficult to express gratitude when we are under stress, yet it is often such situations that permit significant spiritual growth.
In the book called "The Hiding Place" by Corrie ten Boom? She lived in Amsterdam and was sent to a Nazi concentration camp for being a member of the underground resistance movement, by hiding Jews. She and her sister were together most of the time they were imprisoned. They were both devout Christians. They managed to smuggle a Bible into the camp. They held Bible studies all the time, even tho it was punishable by death. One day they were studying their Bible and came to a verse that said, in all things, to give Thanks. Corrie's sister, Betsie, told her that they had to give thanks for EVERYTHING God gave them. Even the fleas, which were a BIG problem in their barracks.
The FLEAS??? No, that was going too far! Corrie just couldn't understand, but Betsie insisted and they gave thanks for the fleas.
Later, she found out that the reason they never had a problem with their Bible studies was because the guards didn't want to come into that barracks any more than absolutely necessary because there were all those fleas!!!
So here is the question to ask yourself... are you grateful for the FLEAS in your life???
